Here’s a somewhat disturbing “celebration” of Kids Who Smoke at holytaco. I post it because it shows (for one thing) how unused we are to seeing media representations of something we all know is actually fairly common. Tobacco companies have always recruited their customers among the under 16s, and I maintain that the over-18 year-old who decides to start smoking is a very rare beast indeed.

The other point here is that the cigarette is a very powerful signifier, heavy with signified meanings – starting with teenage rebellion, but with many others too. In some of these photos, it appears to be a symbol of wealth and status, as well as of neglect and poverty.

The comments thread below the collection is interesting. Gets abusive, with a fair amount of trolling, and some copyright controversy!
