Journalist David Hepworth has suggested on Twitter that crime writer P D James’ fiery interview today with Mark Thompson, director general of the BBC, could be the Corporation’s “Belgrano moment”. I’ll explain what he means by that in a moment, but for now here’s flavour of how James’ interview with Thompson (on Radio 4’s Today [...]

There’s a good comment piece in the Independent by Christopher Bland, former BBC executive, considering the politics of different approaches to the BBC:
The Conservatives have been sensibly supportive, in general terms, of the BBC as one of the United Kingdom’s few remaining world-class organisations, as has, most of the time, the Labour Government. A BBC [...]

“Those who use the BBC most are least likely to object to it; those who don't use it permanently resent it.

We've seen a pretty relentless onslaught from the press over the summer, culminating in James Murdoch's MacTaggart Lecture. Delivering the prestigious MacTaggart lecture at the Edinburgh TV Festival, James Murdoch (youngest son of Rupert – wonder how he got his job?) has attacked both the BBC and Ofcom, complaining that they’re stifling the media market in the UK.
James Murdoch hits out at BBC and regulators at Edinburgh TV festiva.

The Guardian has an article today about the possibility of US online catchup service Hulu arriving in the UK. Hulu aggregates content from NBC, ABC and Fox, but in entering the UK market would need to negotiate through the minefield of various broadcast rights.
One of the ironies of their precious copyright laws, and their silly [...]

Peter Sissons, 66, is retiring from the BBC. Before leaving, he has a(nother) go at the trend towards eye candy young and good looking news presenters. Sissons quits with a final swipe at ‘pretty’ presenters – The Independent.
He also attacked what he called “wannabe” presenters with no frontline reporting experience. “The world is stuffed with [...]

We’re being treated at the moment to the unedifying sight/sound of the BBC bending over backwards to be “balanced” in its reporting of the British National Party and their two European Parliament seats.
The Beeb are being careful not to criticise the BNP in any way. They’re also chiding other guests for making statements about the [...]
