We Study Media

Homework Projects

I’ll keep this page updated with all the posts with the “Homework” tag.

1. Genre Study – something to do before September

2. Independent Study - your coursework project for the A2 year.

3. AS Coursework – Year 12 – Scriptwriting

4. In order to work out where we all are and where we need to go, I’d like you to spend an hour answering ONE of the following two questions:

4c) The development of new/digital media means the audience is more powerful in terms of consumption and production. Discuss the arguments for and against this view.

OR

4d) “The new generation of UK media power players are going straight to their audience via the web” www.mediaguardian.co.uk Monday July 14 2008.
How have media institutions responded to the opportunities offered by new/digital media?

Hi Dr Bob,

Just a quick question you may or may not be able to help me with…. a few days or weeks back in class, you mentioned a BBC Economics Editor who predicted the credit crunch before it started happening…. I was wondering if you could remember his name and what he said…thought it might be a good point for the predictabilty of news question….

Cheers,
Chris H

Do you mean Robert Peston? The face of the credit crunch?

Yeah, i think thats the guy… I just thought it would be a good point to make that the news becomes more and more predictable in times of chos, not only for those recieving the news but also for those creating it.

hey, what have we got to do for this presentation weve been set for you?
is it just about one conglomerate or is it like on media institutions?

Georgina, the idea is to do some background research on one of the bigger media organisations.

For example, you could do some research on the BBC Charter and the BBC’s public service remit. What is the BBC supposed to do – and for whom?

Alternatively, look at the institutional structure of Sony: how does the bit of Sony that makes games relate to the bit of Sony that makes cameras? Or releases films? Or records? Or Phones and MP3 players?

Final suggestion: Channel 4, which is in the odd position of being a commercial TV channel with a public service remit like that of the BBC. How does that work in practice? How is Channel 4 funded, and what pressures is it under?

Oh I remember the days of last year when we had to do this. Fun times.

hello,

I have a question regarding the ‘Exorcist’ thangy we’re meant to be doing over half term. Are we making a slide show on the section we were allocated, if so will you be providing stills from the film or should we find them? or are we just writing about our specific bits?

No, I’ll do the screen grabs – and we’ll create the slideshows in class, so all you need to have done is the background research.

Which gives you loads of free time to work on your Med5 project!

hello,

I’m sorry I have missed so many lessons this week I am suffering at the hands of acute laryngitis, which is quite literally rendering me speechless at times. I am getting better so will be in on monday but would it be possible to get of list of topics/summary of what we have covered this week?

thanks

chinia

Monday: Finished the Omen and discussed its context – weren’t you there for that?

Tuesday: Listened to excerpt of On The Hour – satirical news show on the radio with Chris Morris and Steve Coogan (Alan Partridge) which is fairly old but still accurate. Also discussion of how the Hijacked oil tanker story could be linked to the annual news cycle at Christmas (any ideas?). Did a 15 minute splurge on note-taking on a past paper question.

Wednesday: Working on coursework while I gave the one person who had submitted a first draft a one-to-one tutorial.

Thursday – started watching The Devil’s Backbone – it’s really good! Get well soon. Have you tried Manuka Honey? Works for me.

Okay, I’m in the process of catching up with the work I owe you before Christmas.

As far as I recall, it’s:
– The Noam Chomsky research
– The question: “How and why do contemporary genre texts play with generic conventions?”

Anything else I’m forgetting?

The Noam Chomsky research will help you with the question(s) on manufacture and production of the news, coming up in your January exam.

The genre question is one of a number of past-paper questions you should be at least writing outline plans for in preparation for the january exam.

Finally, you should be looking to create a first draft of your independent coursework project.

Thanks.

If you want the Chomsky work and the past paper question handed in, I can give them to you before the end of the week, and the first draft asap.

Am just wondering what work would be best to get on with in relation to the exam coming, i have completed a case study on the three platforms and have done a few past papers but feel there is something more i could be doing

The main thing at this point would be to revise the lifestyle topic (remembering all three platforms: broadcast, print, and e-media). The second thing would be to revise the key concepts (audiences, institutions, representations, and media language). Most of you are strong on media language.

hey,
what was this essay we were supposed to write? cant find it online like you said, although i am probably looking in the wrong place.

Spend an hour writing an answer to one of these:

4c) The development of new/digital media means the audience is more powerful in terms of consumption and production. Discuss the arguments for and against this view.

4d) “The new generation of UK media power players are going straight to their audience via the web” http://www.mediaguardian.co.uk Monday July 14 2008.
